Welcome to our family, Diamondbacks fans.

Coming to you from Baseball Nirvana in Arizona, we are PHNX D-backs. Born and raised in a desert where baseball wasn’t supposed to survive, we are fans built by Joe Garagiola Jr. and powered by the sunshine our retractable roof lets in.

With over ten seasons of covering the Arizona Diamondbacks as media and over twenty years of being diehard fans under our belt, our writers and hosts Derek Montilla and Jesse Friedman have been at Chase Field during some memorable moments with this team.

Derek, occasionally known as The Mayor of PHNX, has been covering the D-backs since 2012. Once nominated Best Dressed in the clubhouse by Adam Jones and Worst Interviewer by Jake Lamb, he has spent the last four years covering the beat for Arizona Sports. He’s also the only man in Chase Field history to eat three Churro Dogs in under 10 minutes.

All jokes and actual achievements aside, Derek is a dedicated member of the D-backs media and a knowledgeable inside source.

Since his first show in 2013, Jesse has hosted numerous podcasts in sports, higher education, and human rights. Most recently, he has covered the D-backs each of the last five seasons as the founder and editor of The Rattle. Basically, he’s the brains of this operation.

If you happen to be one of those baseball stat nerds, you’re in luck. Jesse’s been crunching those numbers for more than a decade. So, whether you’re more into fWAR or bWAR, wRC+ or wOBA, FIP or DRA, rest assured that Jesse speaks your language.

We look forward to bringing you updates, insight, and a whole lot of fun right here on PHNX covering the team that brought Arizona our first major championship.

But this isn’t just team coverage. We are in this together as a family. We are here to ride the waves of the season with you – from unprecedented no-hitters to the fact that Robbie Ray basically became Sandy Koufax the moment he skipped town.

Our live shows will feature questions, comments, and more from our community with some surprise guests dropping in. Meanwhile, our podcasts will feature breakdowns on games and organizational transactions as well as heavily covering the D-backs minor league farm system.

And we did mention this is Baseball Nirvana, so we won’t just be bringing you D-backs coverage. With beautiful weather year-round and wall-to-wall baseball in Arizona, we will be everywhere, from Arizona Fall Ball to Spring Training to Opening Day.

We are fans first. We eat, sleep, and breathe baseball. But we’re also professional journalists who strive for excellence in everything we do.

We’ll show up early, leave late, and tell stories you won’t find anywhere else. We plan to redefine what you expect out of local coverage of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

We invite you to join us on this journey and become a part of our PHNX D-backs community.

Derek Montilla, occasionally known as The Mayor of PHNX, has covered the Arizona Diamondbacks beat for over 10 seasons. He's a career .093 hitter as an amateur with more errors than runs scored, so everyone decided that the press box was a better fit. The Arizona native is a diehard fan of all Valley sports and can also be found roaming free ringside at local pro wrestling shows.
