When North Dakota men’s hockey coach Brad Berry called Sun devils men’s hockey coach Greg Powers a couple of years ago, the hope was to stage the US Hockey Hall of Fame Game between the two teams in territory ripe for college expansion. “I think originally the idea was to have this in Seattle, kind of Pac-12 territory with the…
The Coyotes stepped on the ice for practice on Thursday at Mullett Arena, marking the first time that the team had fully experienced Arizona State’s brand-new venue since it was completed less than a month ago. There will be fresh criticism of the building’s crowd capacity by various media outlets and hockey fans this week. There will be hiccups as the team, the league and the NHLPA try to iron out some issues including the set-up for the temporary visiting dressing rooms, which drew a lot of attention on Wednesday. There will be financial challenges aplenty for the Coyotes as they await a vote from the Tempe City Council on their proposed arena and entertainment district just down the Salt…
Sun Devils men’s hockey coach Greg Powers nearly got the complete effort that he was looking for from his team. After a week’s worth of practice in which he cajoled his players to funnel bodies and pucks to the net in an effort to solve their scoring woes, ASU broke out with a season-high five goals in a 5-3 win against Colorado College at Mullett Arena on Friday. The power play clicked for a goal on four chances, even if it was from the second unit and player of the game Demetrios Koumontzis. The Devils won a majority of their faceoffs, TJ Semptimphelter (29 saves) was superb in goal again, and ASU even got a goal from its defense when…
When the disappointing 2021-22 season ended, Arizona State men’s hockey coach Greg Powers and his staff identified one area in particular that needed improvement: the team’s ability to keep the puck out of the net. In the offseason, the Sun Devils revamped their goaltending position and they spent a good chunk of training camp focusing on defending better; even delivering the edict that those who did not defend well would not play. The results have been there through six games. ASU is allowing 2.7 goals per game, which ranks 23rd in the nation (ASU was tied for 51st last season), and goaltender TJ Semptimphelter is 15th in the nation with a save percentage of .934. The issue that Powers did…
You couldn’t write a script better than the one that unfolded at the Sun Devils men’s hockey team’s first-ever game at Mullett Arena on Friday. In front of a sold-out crowd and a student section larger than the entire capacity of Oceanside Ice Arena, captain Josh Doan ushered in a new generation of ASU hockey. “There’s hockey gods and they were here tonight because Josh Doan certainly deserves to have that benchmark in history in our program,” coach Greg Powers said. That benchmark, of course, is the goal that Doan scored with 45 seconds left in the first period to give the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead over Colgate. The team went on to win in a 2-0 shutout. Seriously,…
Arizona State’s men’s hockey team will play 39 games this season against teams from all six Division I conferences. The Sun Devils will also face all four other independent programs. Twenty-four of ASU’s games will be held at Mullett Arena and coach Greg Powers said that the Sun Devils could host as many as 29 games next season. “Right now,...
When the NCAA canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 college hockey season due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Sun Devil hockey was in the best place in the program’s Division I history. The Sun Devils were 22-11-3, they were ranked 13th in the nation, 12th in the Pairwise Rankings and they were absolutely headed to their second straight NCAA Tournament. The global pandemic stalled all of that momentum. Faced with major travel restrictions and the uncertainty of the pandemic’s future, most hockey conferences chose to play only intra-conference games while others such as the Ivy League schools canceled the 2020-21 season altogether. As an independent, ASU had no choice but to play an all-road schedule in the Big Ten if…
Sun Devils hockey coach Greg Powers says the starting goaltending job is wide open with two weeks remaining before the team's season opener.
Bemidji State transfer Lukas Sillinger should give an already potent ASU offense some additional pop.
