Pittsburgh's Jake Guentzel celebrates after scoring a goal during the second period against the Coyotes.

Jake Guentzel doesn’t need approval from his dad, Mike, who is a pro scout for the Coyotes. Over the past five seasons, only 10 players in the NHL have scored more goals than the Pittsburgh Penguins’ vastly underappreciated wing. With his dad in town for the Coyotes pro scout meetings, and in attendance at Mullett Arena for Sunday’s Coyotes-Penguins game, however, Jake put on a show. Guentzel scored two, second-period goals and the Penguins snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 win against the Coyotes. The loss was the fifth straight for the Coyotes, who have been outscored 22-9 during the skid. The loss also snapped the Coyotes’ three-game winning streak at home. https://youtu.be/iFEPLKsujyk “I saw a really good…

And now we wait. The mind-numbing 2022 season is finally over and we’ll hopefully know within the next 24 hours what Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill will do next. Sunday’s 38-13 loss to the 49ers was predictable. The out-manned Cardinals battled in the first half and were trailing 14-13 after a late second-quarter touchdown. However, the 49ers quickly marched down the field and increased their lead to 21-13 on a touchdown with 1:01 remaining. The rout was essentially on when San Francisco scored on the first possession of the second half. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed a 21-yard pass to running back Christian McCaffrey on third-and-17 and two plays later running back Elijah Mitchell scampered 37 yards, setting up his second touchdown…

I hope . . . Everyone realizes how important right tackle Kelvin Beachum was to the offense this season. With linebacker Zaven Collins out for Sunday’s game against the 49ers, there will be only two Cardinals players that will have started all 17 games: Beachum and safety Jalen Thompson. Beachum has played 97.8 percent of the 1,153 offensive snaps this season and has played the last two games with knee and ankle injuries. When he suffered the injuries against the Broncos in the collision with Colt McCoy that resulted in a concussion for the quarterback, Beachum came back after missing 16 snaps. When he spoke this past week after being named the winner of the PFWA (Professional Football Writers of…

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zach Davies throws a pitch against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.

According to a report from the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Diamondbacks are bringing back right-handed pitcher Zach Davies on a one year, $5 million deal with $3 million in incentives. Some outlets have also reported a $5.5 million mutual option for 2024. Given that Davies just had a 4.09 ERA and 98 ERA+ in his age-29 season, the...

Cardinals right tackle Kelvin Beachum has been as positive as possible navigating a season that will finish in California Sunday with a game against the 49ers. He was awarded the Steve Schoenfeld Good Guy Award Wednesday by the local chapter of the PFWA (Professional Football Writers of America) for being a consistent stand-up guy throughout the season. But even Beachum had to acknowledge the long, strange trip this season has been when he met with the media and described it as being “treacherous.” The dictionary definition of treacherous is “hazardous because of presenting hidden or unpredictable dangers.” That says it all. Beachum began listing a few of the things that happened since last February, then throughout the season and barely…

Desert Former Sun Devil Johnny Walker took part in the 2018 Hockey Classic

Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers walked into the community ice arena adjacent to Mullett Arena last Friday and thought he was experiencing a senior moment. There was Michigan Tech coach Joe Shawhan preparing his team to skate. “I was honestly confused,” Powers said, laughing. “I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I thought we played BC tonight.'” If you’re wondering how hard it is for Powers to lure teams to Tempe to compete in the Desert Hockey Classic, there’s your answer. The tournament begins today at Mullett Arena, but Michigan Tech arrived last Thursday (Dec. 29) and both Boston University and Air Force, the tournament’s other two participants, arrived on Tuesday. “It’s a destination tournament,” Powers said. “We live in…

Shayne Gostisbehere leads all Coyotes defensemen in points.

Sometimes, Philly fans throw snowballs at Santa.  Sometimes, they throw batteries at baseball players.  Sometimes, they throw wristbands at hockey players.  Sometimes, they just throw the hockey players away instead. As Shayne Gostisbehere prepares to play his 500th career NHL game against the team that drafted him in the third round in 2012 — in the city where he made his mark as the Calder Trophy runner-up to Artemi Panarin in 2016 — this much is clear: Whatever plans the Philadelphia Flyers had to replace his cap space with younger players and remain in playoff contention have failed in the short term. Philadelphia missed the playoffs last season, finishing just four points ahead of the rebuilding Coyotes. As the two teams…

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Drey Jameson throws a pitch at Oracle Park against the San Francisco Giants.

With Evan Longoria and Zach Davies reportedly in the fold on one-year deals, the Diamondbacks’ offseason to-do list is nearing completion and the 2023 roster is taking shape. It is hard to say if any individual move to date has meaningfully moved the ball forward for 2023, but the team as a whole looks better on paper. In addition to Longoria and Davies, the Diamondbacks signed a pair of free-agent relievers in Scott McGough and Miguel Castro. They also dealt Cooper Hummel to the Seattle Mariners for an intriguing right-handed bat in Kyle Lewis. The biggest headliner of the offseason to date was trading outfielder Daulton Varsho to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and…

It was a game in which the Cardinals had only eight of the 22 projected starters at the beginning of the season available to play, so it’s no surprise there were some eye-opening snap counts in the 20-19 loss to the Falcons. One that stood out was rookie cornerback Christian Matthew being the only defensive starter to play every snap. At the position, he was followed closely by Jace Whittaker, who missed only three. Josh Jackson, who was claimed on waivers from the Steelers at the beginning of the week, did not play. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said it was “a tall task” for Matthew to do what he did after not playing much in the first 15 games of the…
